10 Key Takeaways from Recently Concluded Assembly Elections

BENGALURU: Assembly elections were recently concluded in five states- Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Puducherry, Kerala, and Assam. The election result was a testimony of people acceptance for the current central and state politics. In some states, people continued their faith in the current government and other states results overturned the fortunes of the reigning parties. There are some key points needed to be noted, from voters' current mood. Here are 10 key takeaway points compiled by The Economic Times website from the latest election results.

Saffron Party is Spreading its Roots in India

BJP is steady in becoming a true Pan-India party. By winning Assam elections, they got rid from the allegation of being only a Hindi belt party. BJP is ruling in nine states and with allies in four states. Current mandate shows people believe in previously stated Hindu nationalist party.

Congress Losing Power in Country

Congress lost its rule in two more states that being Kerala and Assam. The history was about to repeat in Uttarakhand also, before which court intervened in time to save Congress’ hopes alive to rule the Government there. Currently, the Congress party is ruling only six states out of 29 in the Country.

Rahul Gandhi Needs to be Evolved in Party Happenings

Nothing is going in the right direction for the Congress party, and in the hands of its supremo Rahul Gandhi it looks more hopeless than ever before. By continuously attacking the central government on several issues like Rohit Vemula suicidal case or JNU agitations, he showed some fresh thinking. However, at times he becomes so repetitive that he does not even meet his own party representatives of Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh. Rahul needs to show his continued engagement to the party activities and treat politics as a serious business.

Importance of Local Leadership

BJP learned some lessons from its Bihar and Delhi loses that PM Modi’s popularity is not adequate to win each election. Assembly elections have different scenarios and role of the chief ministerial candidate is important. Thus, they played a smart move by declaring Sarbananda Sonowal as the CM candidate of Assam, who also occupies Sports and Youth Affairs minister position in the Central government, and that resulted victory for them.

West Bengal Results Proved- Elections cannot win by Arithmetic Calculations

Numbers do not always matter in politics. Rahul Gandhi took Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar together for Bihar elections and their alliance was able to defeat BJP. Rahul tried to do the same in West Bengal by collaborating with Left to defeat Mamata Banerjee, but with that being said he played petty politics by fighting against the same party in Kerala. However, this backfired for them and voters continued swearing their votes in the support for TMC.
