Bangalore: India has developed a lot over the years. However, development and urbanization also come with a cost, in the form of pollution, population, etc. There are just a few cities that make for a dream location and draw the crowds for reasons like job opportunities, better living standards, and good infrastructure. The Janaagraha Annual Survey of India's City Systems (ASICS) ranked Indian cities based on factors like mobility system, clean water, cleanliness, public amenities, pollution/greenery, crime and safety, bureaucracy. While, in terms of quality of city systems, cities were ranked on urban planning and design, urban capacities and resources, political representation, and citizen participation. Here are the 10 best Indian cities to live in, as listed by rediff.

Surat:
Surat takes the first place on the list and is ranked as India's best city to live in. It scored 1 on both - quality of life and quality of city systems. Known as the diamond capital of the world, Surat is a well-developed metropolis in Gujarat. It is one of the fastest growing cities of the world. It was also recently conferred with "Best Urban City of India" award. Surat gained prominence and recognition for being the '2nd Cleanest City in India' awarded by INTACH during 1995-1996, and was once again declared the '3rd Cleanest City' in India in 2011.

Pune:
Pune is the second best Indian city to live in. The city ranked 2nd in quality of life and sixth for quality of city systems. Pune is the ninth largest metropolis in India. These days, the city is known for its high educational facilities and relative prosperity. It is the cultural capital of Maharashtra and has also had manufacturing, glass, sugar, and forging industries since the 1950-60s. It has a growing industrial vicinity, with IT and automotive companies setting up factories. The cultural activities and job opportunities attract migrants and students from all over India and abroad.

8: I Hope it is not perfect to give ranking only by taking consideration of quality and quality of the city. I hope this ranking is not realistic one. Like Mumbai, you know its worst city to live : Points: Slums; pollution; life expectancy; education; people; beggars; medical; traffic; prostitute racket; murder; lots more ....

10: I traveled and lived in many big cities in India, but to live in I thing Kolkata is the good place basically for those people who earns less money. You can live here at good condition with your family having a monthly income of Rs-10,000/-. You can get any commodities at a less price than other Indian cities. The basic needs of Indian people are " Roti, Kaapda aur makaan" (food, clothing and accommodation),here you can get these things at very low price.

19: The politicians in this country are concerned about their own power and doesnt care about the citizen's in this country. So people need to be honest when they think about the condition of the cities in each state. This kind of attitude will give way for improvements in future..
Posted by:Indian Realist - 16 Jul, 2013
20: Small Indian cities are far better than big cities in each state in India
Posted by:Indian Realist - 16 Jul, 2013
21: They have included chennai and kolkata, which shows how the ranking system is biased
Posted by:Indian Realist - 16 Jul, 2013
22: Search in google about the indian city that has the "highest no of slum dwelllers", that will trigger the truth...
Posted by:Indian Realist - 16 Jul, 2013
23: "Mumbai the biggest slum dwellers in india", ranked as one of the best cities in india. This is a biased rank method( a big lie). Well most of the indian cities are not the best cities to live in, and indians are adopted( Most of the indians got a lot of practice from childhood) to live in the big cities of each state. Indian Govt always covers and sugar coats negative environmental issues and projects only the good things alone( WE INDIANS ARE GOOD AT IT).
"If we still have this attitude, we cannot make our cities a better place to live in" So stop lying...

24: Due to the rapid development of Hinjewadi , It is considered as the ' Upcoming IT hub of Maharashtra'. It is home to the several reputed IT companies which are inscribed in the Rajiv Gandhi IT Park. The whole scenario of Hinjewadi got changed due to this Rajiv Gandhi IT park.
It park of Hinjewadi is the very splendid park which is constructed in different phase. Total 7 phases would be there but only 3 phases have been completed. Many reputed companies like Wipro, TCS, Tech Mahindra, Honeywell, KPIT Cummins, Glodyne, Accenture, Cognizant, Infosys, 3DPLM and many more.
Above 70,000 people are currently working in Pune. Currently Microsoft the giant of IT is also willing to set up new projects in Hinjewadi. The Place is very famous among Jobseekers, students and the corporate people

26: If Pune is so bad, horrible... etc then why every person like to visit and work her. Then why so many non-Marathi people are staying (settled) and working her.
If you people have so problems with the Pune city then please leave and do not visit.

33: It is really unfortunate that the survey was very poor, some of the cities mentioned are not worth living in, and CITIES LIKE NAGPUR,AMRAVATI(MAHARASHTRA), AURANGABAD( MAHARASHTRA), AMRITSAR, CHANDIGARH,LUDHIANA, DID NOT EVEN GET A MENTION....METRO CITIES ARE ONLE MEANT FOR JOB OPPORTUNITIES, BUT THE SMALLER CITIES ARE FROM ALL PARAMETER....EDUCATION,JOB OPPORTUNITIES, LIFE STYLE, FAMILY LIFE.....SAFETY FOR ITS POPULATION SPECIALLY WOMEN....THE LIST NEED A LOT OF CORRECTIONS...

37: Huh ! New Delhi that is surprising. The people here are mostly from PAKISTAN ( A divisive, egoistic, selfish abusive & screwed mentality people). Most of the the Bihari & UP bhiyas & Yadavs, make a good cocktail along with the dilli kaa Mullas & Baniyas, like the Khans, Mohammeds, sharmas, vermas, aggarwals, malhotras, guptas, bharadwajs, khannas, katarias, all count money even if it means selling their own Girl child. Most are self centered, selfish Morons. Delhi is a dangerous place to reside where the above mentioned race can RAPE you with their looks, trust me the congress thrives by playing politics among these clans / Race & rules INDIA.
Posted by:saji - 12 Apr, 2013
38:
Also the original Delhiites were mostly Gujjars(Mostly into Robbing, stealing & decoity) & Jats (Agri Land lords, The so called chaudhary's) who are literally Extinct.
Now most Delhites have the mentality of the the UP CMs Akhilesh Yadavs mama(Uncle & Bro of Mulayam) who says 'steal but dont commit Decoity' ??? so are most Delhites, UPites & Biharis.
Great Lagea Rahoo, destroy INDIA.

I agree VISAKHAPATNAM is better than Hyderabad for it good public transport

42: I disagree with Pune being the 2nd best city to live in India, unless weather and safety of woman is the most important factor considered in this survey. In fact, of my traveling and living across India and globe, I believe Pune is the worst city in the world I have lived in. They have too much racism, low intellectual capital, no respect for time, dishonest, rude, illiterate and arrogant localite population. Rental housing sector is full of cheats. Auto associations, govt buses, petrol pumps employs the worst human beings on earth. Even the localite senior citizens possess all the qualities mentioned above.
On the positives, it is the most safest city in India for woman and you can feel that in the air.

I concur to each and every point you mentioned about Pune! And to top it all off, the public transport system is in shambles. The fact that it ranked 2nd Best city in India escapes my reasoning capacity.

+2 about the racist localities in the streets, if you are not a Marathi, you are nobody to them (some won't even look at you are talk to you)!
Kush Replied to: Panda - 11 Apr, 2013
45:
Pune is worst in terms of transportation..and yes ofcourse, like most of local pune marathi people, they r jealous and dishonest... Mostly uneducated or low educated, the original marathi population in Pune are actually engaed as shopkeepers or auto drivers... People in important and higher positions are generally from other states only.. Bus frequency is very poor and condition of buses r pathetic. 90% of buses dont have proepr seats in place..
umesh Replied to: Kush - 15 Jun, 2013
46:
I agree what you said about transportation it really sucks.. But your 2nd point is disgusting. You said that local people are mostly rickshawlas & all it's really funny & shows your level of thinking. It is said that half knowledge is dangerous so kindly correct your facts.
Mayuresh Gokhale Replied to: umesh - 04 Sep, 2013
47:
Surely Mayuresh will say that because he himself is a Marathi.. but truth is afterall truth and just shrugging it off wont make it a lie. Pune is populated not because Marathi people are good and educated, its just because some Important It Infrastructure is there. And how many Marathis even work there? The statistics would make u realise the fact
