10 Indian Films that Deserved Oscar Mention

BENGALURU: How mammoth is the Indian Film Industry? Any guesses? It is the largest, the planet Earth has ever seen. Indians have had a long lasting love affair with cinema, making it the country with biggest film audience. Here we have ‘Bombay’s Hollywood’—the Bollywood and the southern film industry, and an endless regional film industry. Such a vast industry is not very welcome in the Oscars. Why? It is surprising to find that an industry that produces over 1500 movies each year, fails at Oscars.

There are several reasons why Indian movies are not often nominated for Oscars. Some say the Oscar board is biased; some say the movies nominated lack the required credentials. Whatever may be the reason, Indians would be delighted to see some of these brilliant movies being nominated for Oscars. Here is a list of probable movies that should have made it to the Oscars, based on inputs from NDTV, WordPress and Mensxp:

Khaagaz ke PhoolKaagaz Ke Phool (1959):

Remember this movie? All most all who watched this melancholic movie would raise their hands for it to be nominated. It’s disheartening that Guru Dutt’s finest piece of art work, Kaagaz Ke Phool starring Waheeda Rehman somehow did not appeal to the Oscar board. The same year the board had nominated Satyajit Ray’s ‘The World of Apu’ or ‘Apur Sansar’, instead of Kaagaz Ke Phool. Perhaps it was the wrong time of release.

Kaagaz ke Phool may seem eerily familiar but it is much poignantly portrayed on the big screen. It is also true that we don’t nominate the deserving movies. In same year there were three other movies—‘Samskara’, ‘Mrigayaa’, ‘Chomana Dudi’ which won the National Awards, which also could have been the best picks for Oscar.
