Video-Editing Software LightWorks Coming To Linux

Bangalore: The popular video-editing software, LightWorks is now coming on an open source flagship, Linux.

LightWorks has been utilized to edit movie classics such as 28 Days later, Hugo, The King’s Speech, Pulp Fiction etc. After being a popular platform for video editing on windows, developers are now bringing it to the open source arena.

LightWorks for Windows is written in a million lines of code that tags it as a ‘light’ code as compared to other video editing software that consists of over 20 million lines of code. The sole purpose of reducing the number of codes in LightWorks was to keep it simple and efficient.

One crucial step adopted while porting the code to Linux was the developers did not have to rewrite the entire code again but instead they took assistance of a unique method. They moved the code to an OS-independent layer. As a result around 97 percent of the code is now OS-independent. It was only the remaining 3 percent that was rewritten to make the code run on Linux as well as Mac.

With Windows 8 on the brink of its release, it becomes even more obvious for software companies to move towards a more OS-independent platform that seems like the only valid solution.

As Jack Wallen write in his blog, “It seems to me, the future of computing will depend upon OS-independent software. Those old-guard companies that refuse to open their eyes to this possibility might wind up with a serious up-hill battle on their hands.”

These advancements are making sure that many enterprise level applications will soon be available to Linux, Mac and tablets.
