Indian Power Systems, Primary Targets For Cyber Criminals

Bangalore: The collapse of the North grid last month has exposed how vulnerable Indian Power Systems are to cyber criminals. The revelation exposes grievous implications that can harm the national security and in turn disrupt the economy.
The electrical system of any country acts as a backbone on which rely the national security and economy. An unauthorized access to these electrical systems can lead to power failures than will hamper the functioning on the defense forces and the industries. According to a report by TOI, it has been pointed out that the major sectors that have loopholes are the transmission and distribution. The generating units are less prone to such attacks as switching operations are not dependent on the networking.
An attack on the country’s power system, like the once last month, will disrupt the functioning of critical amenities including hospitals, transport etc. To cope with these situations, there arises a need of a reliable telecom network.
As power-grids are equipped with their own fiber cables, it will be advisable to built proper It networks using dedicated fiber cables that can prevent such cyber attacks.
