Cybersecurity Top Priority for Tech Majors

BANGALORE: With the threat of cyber attacks from a host of hostile entities — ranging from domestic saboteurs to foreign rivals—looming all over the virtual world, Cyber warfare has emerged a top concern to national security with an increasing number of sophisticated cyber attacks.

Today, India's biggest software companies have put cybersecurity on top of their agendas. This is mainly because the ever growing threat perception about hacker attacks could likely damage their reputation and affect their ability to win business, reports Varun Sood for The Times of India.

Most of the attacks India deals with, originates from countries like the U.S., China, Russia, a few east European countries and Iran. Chinese hackers have targeted a large number of institutions, even stealing data from schools run by the armed forces.

“In the past, India used to be a target of cyber attacks for political motivation only. Over the past few years, the global cybercrime landscape has changed dramatically, with criminals employing more sophisticated technology and greater knowledge of security breach,” said consulting firm KPMG.

The agendas comes into consideration after one of the top five Indian software firms faced extraordinary attacks on a customer's mortgage processing systems, a platform which the company owns and manages on the client's behalf. The incident went unnoticed for a week until it was pointed by a junior engineer, according to an executive. Right after this, the board's risk committee beefed up the necessity to have monthly and sometimes real-time reviews of preparedness.
