Corning and Samsung Team Up in a $600 Million Glass Plant


Bangalore: South Korean tech giant, Samsung and American glass manufacturer, Corning have signed a memorandum to build a $600 million glass plant in China. The memorandum was signed in the presence of Wuxi New District Government, China. According to Samsung, the plant is all set to produce TFT-LCD glasses used in laptops and LCD monitors.

Apart from that, Samsung Corning Precision Materials, equity venture between Samsung and Corning, will also be shifting some of its glass manufacturing machineries and capacities from Korea to the new plant in China.

Corning is well known for their gorilla glass screens, implemented as highly durable screens in tablets and smartphones by Samsung. These screens have really contributed to the much talked success of Samsung. As for now, it’s still unknown that whether this plant is meant to produce gorilla screens.

According to Corning, a final agreement is still on cards between Samsung’s display business and Corning’s Singapore unit. Now after the final agreement, the new joint tech venture is all set for production by the end of this year.
