BlackBerry Unveils eBBM Suite to Protect Corporate Data

BANGALORE:  Blackberry announced the launch of BBM Protected, the first product of its eBBM Suite, which is a new member added to the BBM family of products and services. The app, according to Blackberry, is the first instant messaging application that would work within the standard BBM application, so, there’s no new hardware to purchase, no new servers to install, no blackberry smartphone OS updates required and no need to download any additional apps.

Built-in with FIPS 140-2 encryption, a feature that enables users to send fully encrypted messages between people in the same company and to share and chat with friends and family outside the company using BBM Protected. It incorporates three layers of security. It protects corporate data of banks, governments, law firms and healthcare providers, defense contractors.

Separate encryption keys are provided by BlackBerry for each message sent. It would discourage hackers from intruding the messages of the users, as they will have to crack the code for each message and combine all the messages to see the full conversation. When two BBM Protected users will try to chat for the first time, they will have to use a secret pass phrase to authenticate their identities and generate the encryption keys used to secure the conversation.

It is said to include new services designed to enable mobile workers to be more productive on the go, while meeting enterprises' needs for security, manageability and control.

BBM Protected is available on both Blackberry OS and Blackberry 10 (BB10) devices. Blackberry added that a version of BBM Protected for BB10 phones using Blackberry Balance, along with those using BBM on iOS and Android, would be available later in the year.
