'Big Data Equals Big Opportunity': Indian IT Pros

Bangalore: The Big data industry is growing at an overwhelming rate where businesses find it as an opportunity rather than an IT challenge. Today organizations are letting their production revolve around big data projects so that they can develop better strategies along with mastering big data as a key ingredient for commercial advantages.

Nearly 70 percent Indian enterprises are now considering to plan, test and run Big Data projects, according to a recent survey conducted by Informatica Corporation on 200 Indian IT and business professionals, an independent provider of data integration software.

The study covered some major aspects in big data like diversification, prospects within the environment and challenges. Most of the Indian enterprises cited their concerns towards issues on traditional data usage and transactional volume growth, the report stated.

On the other hand the assessment clearly revealed some interesting facts like the significant increase in data from social media, mobile devices and machine-generated data.

From the survey respondents, around 55 percent believed that improving efficiency in business operations can be accomplished with better productivity along with accumulating more data. This was followed by securing commercial customers. 34 percent thought that improving business agility is the number one industry driver, followed up by relevant factors like enhanced analytics and reduced IT costs, covering 36 and 30 percent respectively.

Lack of maturity in Big Data tools is the top challenge (42 percent) that respondents face in Big Data projects which includes shortage of support for reuse and metadata in current Hadoop environments. Another key challenge faced by enterprises is the deficiency of support for real-time streaming data, followed up by difficulties involved in using latest technologies, challenges faced due to poor data quality and limited availability of skilled developers to manage Big Data.
