Airvana Named a Visionary in the Magic Quadrant for Small Cell Equipment

BANGALORE: Airvana, a provider of small cell solutions with over 1.5M small cells shipped, announced it has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the “Visionaries” quadrant of the 2014 Magic Quadrant for Small Cell Equipment .  Airvana and its small cell solutions, including its new OneCell™ system, were evaluated based on business and technology vision, as well as the ability to execute against that vision in their products and services.

According to the report, “deployments of enterprise picocells and femtocells will start growing in 2015 as bring your own device (BYOD) schemes and secure cloud services fuel demand for improved cellular services in office environments. Gartner's research shows that 30 percent of calls made by enterprise employees at their desks are on mobile phones, but many LTE and 3G frequencies are poor at macrocellular indoor coverage.”

The growing importance of mobile applications creates challenges for enterprises that need high-quality LTE service, and for mobile operators that need to cost-effectively deliver service to in-building users. Existing distributed antenna systems (DAS) solutions are costly, difficult to implement, and often require hardware changes to support advancements in LTE technology or coverage of new frequency bands.  OneCell is a groundbreaking LTE small cell system that addresses these issues and delivers consistent, superior LTE performance throughout enterprises and public spaces, with the economics and simplicity of managed Wi-Fi.

Based on its revolutionary small cell cloud RAN architecture, OneCell delivers up to a 10x performance improvement over traditional “standalone” small cell approaches. OneCell is the first small cell solution capable of multi-operator deployments, which is critical for public venues and for the growing number of bring your own device (BYOD) enterprise environments. OneCell equipment and deployment costs are a fraction of those for DAS, and OneCell provides investment protection by supporting new capabilities through software upgrades.

In September 2014 the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) recognized OneCell’s innovations by naming it the winner in the “In-Building Wireless – Small Cell, Wi-Fi, LAN” category of its annual Emerging Technology (E-Tech) Awards.

“Our OneCell system is changing the way mobile operators can deliver LTE to the enterprise” said Richard Lowe, president and CEO of Airvana. “Gartner’s evaluation is certainly consistent with the tremendous interest we have been seeing from the operator community.”
