World's 10 Wealthiest Women

BANGALORE:  “In the twenty-first century, women will change the nature of power rather than power changing the nature of women”, said Bella Abzug. This year’s Forbes list of world billionaires has 172 women billionaires. Though most of them happen to inherit their wealth from their father or spouse, there are a handful of women who have built their fortune single handedly. The list of self made women billionaires includes names such as Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Nigerian oil magnet Folorunsho Alakija, Denise Coates, Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer and few others.

Now, something about women ‘changing the nature of power’- Barbara Stanny of Forbes notes, “While women earn 75 percent of men’s total income, their overall contribution to charity is 93 percent of men’s.” and “Fortune 500 companies with more female executives had a 35 percent higher return on equity and a 34 percent higher total return to shareholders.” It’s time to meet the richest women on earth.

Christy Walton: She inherited her fortune from her late husband John T. Walton-the son of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton.

She inherited $18.2 billion in 2005 following the death of her husband in a plane crash.  Her  current net worth is $36.7billion. Wal-Mart contributes to the bulk her fortune along with First Solar, where her husband had invested heavily. She was declared world’s ninth richest person in November 2013. Condé Nast Portfolio magazine ranked her as the highest female philanthropist. The San Diego Natural History Museum, The Philanthropy Roundtable, national association of trustees and staff and the San Diego Zoological Society are the organizations to which she makes regular donations.
