Women Empowerment: Google And Tata Trust To Take Initiative

BANGALORE: Digital India campaign is being backed by Google India who has joined hands with Tata trust, the charity trust run by Ratan Tata. The venture is to provide rural women with education about internet by sending 10,000 specially designed bicycles with internet facility into remote villages, reports rediff.com

Women empowerment and digital India campaigns are spread all over the country. Al though we are growing fast as a developed country, the rural women are left far behind. The remote villages in India still fights with child marriages, girl child education, child labor and women empowerment. Since the facilities are less in these parts of the country Google India and Tata trust is going to give a helping hand to under privileged Indian women.

The bicycles will be operated by ‘internet Saathis’, who are trained by Google. The goal of the programme is to train 5,00,000 Indian women in the next 18 months which is also an initiative step towards Digital India. This will start from Gujarat, Rajasthan and Jharkhand and eventually will move on to all parts of the country covering 4,500 villages and 500,000 women across the rural parts of the country.

The Internet cart will be available in a village at least for two days in a week on a regular basis for four to six months. Once the mission is done by one cluster of three villages it will move to help the next cluster in order to complete the mission. Google had launched a similar programme last year by using a tricycle which was not effective because of the difficulties to manage the heavy loaded cart.
