Bangalore: Globalization has affected almost all industries around the world, with companies expanding their operations to different territories other than their country of origin. Hospitality, telecommunications, construction, automotive, entertainment, textile business, food and many other sectors are following the trend. World’s top retail shops are also in the track already, though many others are yet to weave their networks.

According to Deloitte’s report, ‘Global Powers of Retailing’, nearly 60 percent of the world’s top 250 retailers are operating in more than one country; and among those 147 retailers, 115 has their presence in more than one sub-region. Though the retail industry pundits say that the industry still is in stagnation, it is showing much improvement in the last few years; and there is opportunity for growth, especially for the big players.

Target Corporation, commonly referred to as Target, is a U.S. based retailer headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The second largest discount retailer in the United States following Wal-Mart, Target came at ‘No.10’ on the list of world’s top ten retailers with approximate annual revenue of $70 billion. As of 2011, the company employs 365,000 people and it was ranked at the 33rd position on the Fortune 500 in 2010. With a bull-eye trademark, the company was founded in 1902 by George Dayton as the Dayton Dry Goods Company in Minneapolis and its first Target store was opened in 1962 in Roseville. In August 2000, the company got reorganized and renamed as Target Corporation. In 2011, the company got expanded to Canada.
