Protests Will Hit Business but Safety Important: Pub Owners

New Delhi:  With the Christmas and New Year celebrations ahead, mall and pub owners here expect less business because of the recent protests against the Dec 16 gang-rape of a woman in the national capital. However, they said safety is more important than business.

After protests demanding justice for the victim at India Gate Dec 23 which left 143 people -- including 78 policemen -- injured, the government said all discotheques and pubs in Delhi would close at 1 a.m.

Benu Sehgal, vice-president, DLF Place Saket, says that safety is more important for women than business.

"Fixed time slots will certainly affect business but safety is more important," Sehgal told IANS.

Hridesh Shah, general manager, Maddox, said: "Shutting the club so early will definitely affect our business. Turnout will be lesser as people who want to party are mostly young and the protests have affected them.
