Post Office to Distribute Chana Dal at Subsidized rates

BENGALURU:  Remember those days of standing long hours in front of the post office just to post the letter to our dear ones. Thanks to the technology advancement in making our life simple by the click of a button. Since postal need has drastically narrowed down, it has turned to be more like a supermarket.

The recent news has been flashing about the post offices selling the holy Ganga jal across the country. The bottles were flying off the shelves with everything been sold out within two hours. After, the success of the holy water, the government has initiated to vend chana dal through the post offices in the country.

According to The Business Insider, the delay of states in picking up from the central buffer stock is paving the way for the government to take the effective step.  The action can also be considered as an alternative with the declining postal needs in the country. The consumer affairs secretary Hem Pande told TOI that "We have already talked to the postal department and they are keen to start this. To make a beginning, we will start selling chana dal at subsidised prices at some of the post offices since it's still selling at relatively high price”.

The official press release also outlines that the inter-ministerial panel while reviewing the prices of the essential commodities suggested postal networks to act as the distribution centre in the absence of government outlets in states. The panel is further planning on distributing pulses in the form of packets through the post office.

The centre also proclaims that the arrangement is a stopgap until a professional agency is organized to manage the buffer stock of food. The government has even approved to create 20 lakh tonne buffer stock of pulses.
