Indian Spiritual Gurus and Their Empire of Wealth


Bangalore: Over the years many Indian ‘gurus’ have been accused and being exposed. Indian culture has great amount of spiritual beliefs imbibed into it and many fake gurus tend to take advantage of it and exploit the common people. Some of these religious gurus are among the biggest money minters in the country.

One of the most famed gurus of India, Baba Ramdev runs a multi-crore empire, possesses a Scottish island and has an estimated wealth of $202,503,000. Read on to know few of the multi millionaire Indian gurus who are making it big bucks.

Mata Amritanandamayi
Estimated net worth: $273,257,000

Sudhamani Idamannel, also known as Mata Amritanandamayi Devi and Amma ("Mother"), the Hindu spiritual leader and teacher is famous as the “The Hugging Saint”. She has hugged close to 30 million people to date, she is widely respected for her humanitarian activities and is probably by far the richest godwoman in the country.

Controversies:

 The Kerala-based writer and head of the Indian Rationalist Association, Sreeni Pattathanam wrote the book Matha Amritanandamayi: Sacred Stories and Realities, a controversial critique first published in 1985. The author reportedly claimed that miracles of Amritanandamayi are fake and bogus and there also have been many deaths around Amritanandamayi’s ashrams that are suspicious.

In June 2007, Shantanu Guha Ray wrote on Tehelka weekly that Amritanandamayi Math had large annual turnover of INR crores. In June 2007, novelist Paul Zacharia wrote on Tehelka that Amritanandamayi goes scotfree from scrutinies on money with foreign strings.
