India Should Be Member of Multilateral Export Control Regimes: US

Washington: The United States is engaged with India to help it become a member of four multilateral export control regimes, a senior Obama Administration told lawmakers, insisting it is important New Delhi should be made part of these key international groups.

Testifying before a key Congressional committee, Thomas Kelly, the Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs, told lawmakers that the U.S. is working very closely with India to make it a member of four export control regimes.

These multilateral export control regimes are—Nuclear Suppliers Group, Missile Technology Control Regime, Australia Group for Chemical and Biological controls, and the Wassenaar Arrangement, which is for dual use and conventional arms control in a phased manner.

India, he said, is working intensively on adherence to all of these regimes.

"We are working and collaborating with them. We think it's very important that India be brought on and participate in these. We think that it's going to enhance the international strength of all of these regimes, and it's a high priority for us," Kelly said in response to a question from Congressman Steve Chabot from Ohio.
