E-commerce Soon To Conquer Rural India?


BENGALURU: The fight for supremacy among E-commerce giants in India has reached the next level, with increasing demand for online shopping in rural India. E-commerce firms like Amazon, e-Bay, Flipkart and Snapdeal are now planning to focus on expanding business in small towns and rural parts of the country.

According to recent data 60 percent of the E-commerce traffic is derived from non-metro cities and the business picks up from 50-100 percent rise during festive seasons as reported by ET. Tier 2 cities like Mysore, Surat, Jaipur and Pune are the top emerging cities in E-commerce business.

Amazon India stated that,"We are seeing a massive interest from all over the country, including Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Surat, Vizag, Coimbatore, Patna, Bhopal, Nagpur, Chandigarh and Lucknow.".

Recent data also reveals that there has been a huge increase in number of women customers and most of who are interested in technology and lifestyle products. ‘TVs’ and ‘mobiles phones’ in technology and apparels in lifestyle have topped the list products which interest women the most today.

Significant rise in usage of mobile internet in tier two and tier three cities has been a major contributor for rise in E-commerce traffic in small cities and towns in India. While mobile phones consume 20 per cent overall e-commerce traffic in 2014 it is further expected to rise up to 40 to 45 percent by 2016.  

With more than 70 per cent of Indians still living in suburbs which are equally equipped with internet, Rural India stands as the second largest e-commerce market in the world.
