China Rolls Out Powerful Locomotive

Beijing: China rolled out its first electric locomotive with a hauling capacity of 3,000 passengers, more powerful than ones operating in the country. Suo Jianguo, chief engineer of Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co. Ltd. in Hunan province, said it has a maximum power of 7,200 kilowatts and an operating speed of 160 kmph. He said the locomotive has computer-controlled braking, fire extinguishing, power supply and alert systems. It can cope with increasing passenger demand, Xinhua reported. "This large-power locomotive will become a main force for high-speed trains in China," said Suo. Earlier locomotives were designed to haul 2,000 passengers.
