Best Global Brands 2015: Apple & Google Top the List

BANGALORE: Interbrand's annual Best Global Brands report was out recently and witnessed technology industry on the top once again. Apple & Google have topped for the third consecutive time on the trot thereby becoming the most valuable brands in the world, reports ET.

Although Madison Avenue is hub of the lucrative advertising industry, Silicon Valley has got the most valuable brands across the world.

Interbrand is a brand consultancy group that releases a report on the top global brands every year for the past 16 years. The report for this year was out on October 5 where Apple’s valuation rose by 43 pct from the last year and stands at $170.3 bn whereas Google’s valuation jumped by 12 per cent to stand at $120.3 bn.

The highest leap was witnessed in Facebook’s valuation that rose by 54 pct to reach $22 bn and the brand ranks 23rd on the list this year.

Data and technology has been dominating over advertising and has disrupted the industry over the years. The purchase and sell operations have undergone major changes taking into account the consumer preferences. The process of branding in turn has also altered over the years.

As the tech industry tops, the creative fields struggle to catch up in the brand space.
Jez Frampton, the global chief executive of Interbrand, said that brands still matter at the 12th annual Advertising Week conference held in New York.

"Nowadays, in order to succeed in any marketplace, you not only have to have a great business idea, you have to have a great brand," Frampton said in a recent interview.

The Interbrand list of retail brands this year saw Apple on the leading position whereas Google, Microsoft, IBM, Samsung and Amazon on 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 10th position respectively.

"All the brands in the top are there for a very good reason…They've either transformed or made better how we live our lives." Frampton added.

The creative industry contributed to list with Coca-Cola, Toyota, General Electric, and McDonald's on 3rd, 6th 8th and 9th position respectively.
The ranking is done by determining certain factors like the revenues earned, the influential role played by the brand in attracting the customer’s loyalty.

Volkswagen lost 9 per cent of its value owing to the recent exposure of the emission fraud by the company and dropped to rank 35 from 31.

The new entrants in the list are Lenovo at rank 100; Lego, PayPal, Mini and the Champagne brand Moet & Chandon.

However, Pizza Hut, Nintendo, Gap, Duracell and Nokia fell out of the top 100.
