Ambani's Diwali Has Started Even before, Reliance Jio on its Way to Create a World Record

BENGALURU: Not so surprisingly, though, the Reliance Jio has touched the whopping 16Mn customer base in just 26 days of its launch, by offering one of its kind services in telecom sectors. The company is a subsidiary of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries (RIL), and is involved in introducing a faster system to provide SIM cards to customers. The method of Aadhaar-based (paperless) issuance of SIM cards has already been introduced to 3100 cities and towns. The operations of Jio had commenced from Sep 5th this year.

In a statement, Jio said, it has “achieved this growth faster than any other telecom operator or startup in the world, including the likes of Facebook, Whatsapp, and Skype”. So, its pace of enrolment is definitely a record in itself.

Mukesh Ambani-owned Jio rolled out some great offers offered its voice and data service for free, up to 3 months. The abrupt demand of the SIM card did give customers a hard time initially but, now the process has become smoother and efforts are being made to make SIM cards available in various cities, semi-urban and rural areas.

However, on the other side, rivals such as Idea Cellular, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone have slashed their effective data rates and offered attractive voice plans. The Telecoms have also beefed up their own 4G spectrum holding to keep the existing user stick with their services.

At RIL's 42nd annual general meeting, Mukesh Ambani expressed his satisfaction over the overwhelmed response and spread of Reliance Jio. He said, the company is engaged in meeting users’ everyday expectations and go beyond.

No doubt that the entry of the new player has sparked off a tariff war in the telecom industry by onboarding 1.5 million users on its 4G network during the test phase itself.

Ambani said in the meeting that the new telecom venture “Reliance Jio” aims to create a world record by attracting 100 Mn customers in the shortest possible time.

Currently, Airtel has 257 Mn users, immediately followed by Vodafone which has over 200 Mn subscribers and Idea nearly 177 Mn.
