0.3 Pct Shrink In Market Share Leads BlackBerry To Cut On Jobs

BENGALURU: BlackBerry has announced job layoffs, following its declining control—0.3 percent—of the Smartphone market. An undisclosed number of jobs are likely to cut down as per the reports of BusinessInsider.
"As BlackBerry moves into the next stage of its turnaround, we remain focused on driving efficiencies across our global workforce. As a result, some employees have been impacted," a BlackBerry spokesperson said.
According to Agence France-Presse reports, the cuts made by BlackBerry are a part of a wider turnaround strategy made by BlackBerry to overhead costs. Subsequently, John Chen, the CEO of BlackBerry, announced the turnaround strategy.
The release of an Android Smartphone, this July, from the company was also part of the plans.

The IDC's Smartphone OS Market Share, Q1 2015:

BlackBerry controls only a share of 0.3 percent of the Smartphone market.

In 2014, the company controlled 0.5 percent of the market, while in 2015 it had a more impressive 2.9pct stake.

This makes it the fourth most popular mobile operating system in the world and behind Microsoft Windows Phone, which controls only about 2.7 percent of the 2015 Smartphone market.

Both the operating systems are radically behind iOS and Android, which control 18.3 percent and 78 percent of the 2015 Smartphone market, respectively.

Gartner's stats were similarly negative:

BlackBerry controls only 0.4 percent of the Smartphone market.

Above it, Windows Phone controls 2.5pct, while iOS and Android still continue to rule the market, with 17.9 percent and 79.9 percent, respectively.
