Fake Products on Indian Online Retails- A Major Threat to Reputed Brands

Bangalore: Next time when you do a purchase from an online retail store, make sure that the product is genuine. Apparently, the e-retail stores are giving out fakes and grey market imports of reputed brands to costumers through great deals.

Brands like Lacoste, Puma, Benetton, Canon and Nikon have warned their costumers to negotiate with top retail portals to deal with the menace along with taking legal actions, reports Writankar Mukherjee & Sagar Malviya of Economic Times.

Alongside the loss of sales for marketers, fake products are also making a negative impact on their brand equity and overall credibility of online retail industry. "While there is certain proportion of loss of sales due to such fraudulent listing, it also jeopardises the brand name that matters to us," said Rajesh Jain, director & CEO at Lacoste India.

Lacoste does not sell its goods online, but fakes of its polo T-shirt is available on the e-retail sites ranged between 600  and 1,200, unlike the original ones which are priced at 3,000 per piece in stores.
