Kakatiya University was established on 19th August, 1976 to fulfil the aspirations of the Telangana people for higher education. The founding of the University was in fact a historic event in the sense that heralded a new era in the realms of higher education of this region. The erstwhile Post-Graduate Centre of Osmania University was upgraded and named Kakatiya University. The development of the University over the years has been gradual but impressive. The University was initially accredited with B+ grade by the NAAC in 2002 and reaccredited with A grade in 2008. The University situated in a sprawling area of about 650 acres, has now 24 departments in four colleges on the campus with a network of eleven constituent colleges and 471 affiliated colleges. It has its Post-graduate Colleges at Subedari (Hanamkonda), Nirmal, Karimnagar, Godavarikhani, Khammam and Kothagudem in addtion to University Engineering College at Kothgudem. 

Department of Pharmacy:

In view of rapid expansion of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries during the sixties and early seventies in and around the city of Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, the need for starting of B.Pharm course in Osmania University was felt and as a result, the first batch of students was admitted in 1974 with arrangements for their instruction in the University College of Chemical Technology in the Osmania University campus. During 1976, the first two batches of B.Pharm students were brought to Arts and Science college (a constituent college of Osmania University) Warangal to fulfill the condition of being in Telangana Rural area for tapping funds from Telangana Development Board.The arrangements for their teaching were made in Kakatiya Medical College and Regional Engineering College apart from Arts and Science college.With the establishment of Kakatiya University in August 1976, the reponsibilty of Osmania University for administering the B.Pharm course ceased.

Thus Kakatiya University from its very inception, became the second university in Andhra Pradesh to impart the Pharmacy education and to cater to the needs of Pharmaceutical industry in Andhra Pradesh, the first being Andhra University, Waltair.
