Established with the singular objective to make quality professional education accessible to students, the SOA University in Bhubaneswar, today reckoned as one of the most sought after education hubs in eastern India, also lays equal importance on cerebral activity of its students.

Declared a Deemed University under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, in 2007, SOAU today has several front-ranking institutions under its umbrella  imparting education in engineering, medicine, dental science, nursing, pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology and hotel management, with stress on quality teaching, research and placement.

The University has around 10,000 students and nearly 1,000 qualified faculty members beside 1,100 technical and support staff.

The socially inclusive University with an open admission process through its national level test SAAT and other such examinations has been accredited by the NAAC with Grade 'A' for its overall performance. The different Institutes have won accolades for themselves including quality benchmarking by various agencies like the NBA of AICTE while the University received certification of the International Accreditation Organization (IAO) of USA.

The University has been making continuous efforts to promote focused research by setting up ten research and field centres including the Centre of Excellence in Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences (CETMS), the Centre for Bio-Mechanical Science, the Centre for Nano Sciences and Nano Technology and a Multi-Disciplinary Cell. Besides, it has facilitated the creation of 16 supporting research labs.

As regards publication of research-oriented papers, SOAU till recently had 1253 Indexed publications of which 928 are Scopus Indexed while 325 are indexed in data bases other than Scopus with 43 publications in PubMed. Another feature of the University’s growing stature in research is underlined by the fact that it had an H Index of 21.

A feature of SOA’s growing stature is the rapid growth of the Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital, a 750-bed referral hospital run by it. It is the only hospital in the state to be accredited by National Accreditation Board for Hospital and Health Care Providers (NABH).

The Sum Hospital is also the first in Odisha to set up a Bone Marrow Transplantation unit which successfully conducted the state’s first ever BMT recently. It also has a state-of-the-art Centre for Liver and Hepato-biliary Sciences and a state-of-the-art infertility clinic known as the Centre for Human Reproduction (CHR).

With a view to enlarging the horizon of students and encouraging them to acquire knowledge, SOAU has been organizing a national-level quiz competition since 2011.

The first quiz program was based on India’s heritage and culture which was organized only for engineering students in collaboration with INTACH. But it was decided to conduct a national quiz competition among students of professional courses on a wide spectrum of general subjects from 2012.

SOA QuizWiz, as it has come to be known, was successfully staged in 2012 and 2013 with a prize money of over Rs. 2 lakh. While the winner of the quiz was presented a cheque of Rs. one lakh, the runner up and third place finishers winning Rs. 60,000 and Rs. 40,000 respectively.

It has been attracting students from different places in India including the metros and is conducted by nationally known quiz masters.

The next edition of SOA QuizWiz  will be held on October 26 , 2014 and it is expected that it will attract large number of students this time as well. This time the competition has been thrown upon the undergraduate students as well.
