The Men who ruled India is a masterly distillation of Philip Mason's two classics, 'The Founders' and ' The Guardians' which were written soon after British withdrawal from the sub-continent, when the sights and sounds and smells of an area the size of Europe were still fresh in Memory. From the days of the English arrivals in India at the turn of the sixteenth century rigt through to independence, Mason vivdly chronicals the lives of men who fought, built bridges and railways, administered paternal justice in villages, held missions and conducted a love affair with the most cherished jewel of the British Empire.
About the author
Mr. Mason, who died in 1999, at the age of 93, was a member of the ICS himself, of the United Provinces cadre. First in the 1927 batch, he was Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, at the time of independence and was serving under the redoubtable Sir Chandulal Trivedi who was War Secretary for much of the duration of the World War II.
