Laptops get cheaper as competition in this segment grows stiffer. The San Diego-based wireless communication company Qualcomm will introduce its small low-cost laptop 'Kayak', at Rs. 10,000 in India in the second half of this year.

Supposed to be primarily used for accessing the Internet, Kayak is capable of bringing the Internet over cell phone data networks to the areas that may lack wired Internet service from cable and telephone providers. Qualcomm has already launched a Kayak PC alternative globally.

"Kayak is a reference design for building low-cost wireless-computing devices designed to fill the niche that exists between desktop PCs, which require landlines or separate accessories for connectivity and Internet-capable wireless devices. It uses Qualcomm's dual-core mobile station modem chipsets to provide both computing and connectivity," says Kanwalinder Singh, Senior Vice President and India Head, Qualcomm.

Singh believes that for developing markets like India that are looking at connectivity as an inevitable element, the concepts such as Kayak that leverages 3G wireless technology will be a key to success.
