FOR LONG, INDIANS HAVE WIELDED tremendous clout in technology and professional circles in the U.S. But politics was one area where Indian Americans showed little interest.

But that changed when itinerant public servant Piyush “Bobby” Jindal announced his candidacy for the Louisiana governorship. A child prodigy, Jindal graduated from high school at 16, completed his college degree from Brown University at age 20, and then proceeded to Oxford University as a Rhodes scholar.

On his return, after a short stint as a business consultant, he was recruited by Louisiana Governor Mike Foster to work for the department of health and hospitals, which was in bad shape. Jindal not only rescued the system, but enhanced the quality of health care provided by the state. Jindal made history when he became one of the youngest Asian Americans to hold a senior administration post when he was nominated by President George Bush as assistant secretary of health and human services for planning and evaluation.

By all accounts, Jindal is a popular man in Louisiana. On his arrival at the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, Jindal was given an impressive reception, by members ranging from his strongest supporter and mentor, incumbent Governor Mike Foster, to Congressman Bob Livingston, and Representative Tony Perkins.

“Bobby Jindal is not really a politician—he’s a leader. He’s the best problem solver I've seen and he did a great job of leading both our health care and university systems,” Foster said when Jindal announced his candidacy.

“Bobby is someone who rolls up his sleeves, goes to work, and gets results. He brings with him an incredible energy that will move Louisiana forward—and fast.”

And former congressman Bob Livingston said, “Bobby is the kind of leader who will have success in bringing better job opportunities to Louisiana. Bobby Jindal is one of the brightest, most capable people I've ever met. His experience and his success belie his youthful appearance.”
