Date:   Friday , December 05, 2014

Home healthcare means providing expert medical services to patients who have been treated for a medical condition at a hospital and need to recuperate faster and avoid readmission. Home healthcare services are equally applicable to individuals who require medical care but are not ill enough to take hospital admission.

Home Healthcare - Market Potential

Home healthcare in India is an emerging industry with a current market size of approximately $2-4 billion. The industry has a huge potential considering: Indian healthcare\'s immunity to economic depression; services industry accelerating with huge investments from private players and positive indications from government; innovation in medical devices enabling healthcare access at the-point-of-need; India\'s current 60+ population which is at 100 million to triple by 2050; and increase in average per capita income.

The Transformation

Only a few years back, the industry mainly consisted of nursing bureaus and unskilled caregivers with very limited/negligible clinical expertise. Lack of organized players, inefficient processes and unaudited clinical services translated into huge patient dissatisfaction and resistance from medical fraternity. While this questioned the relevance of these services, it also presented an opportunity to the serious investors to transform the industry. Observing this closely and realizing the prospect was Gaurav Burman, Director, Dabur International, who decided to introduce the concept in India through his company Health Care at Home India. With a mission to build a 21st century model of home healthcare in India, the company cornered the market by providing specialist medical services. The company stands as the market leader for providing highly skilled services like Chemotherapy/Oncology, Critical Care, Post-operative Care, Cardiac Care, Elderly Care and more. The company has also been highly effective in reducing unnecessary hospital visits for the patients by providing basic clinical services like physiotherapy, injection administration, catheter change and wound dressing etc. at the point-of-care.

The Journey

Like any other startup, HealthCare at Home too faced several challenges initially while introducing the concept to patients & doctors. The company took on the challenge and was instrumental in educating doctors, patients, and hospitals about the quality and specifications of the services. Additionally, the management team created a rock-solid backend by: developing a state-of-the-art technology platform; hiring experienced clinical staff; training clinical personnel on sophisticated simulation based training; and creating robust infrastructure for smooth operations.

The company worked closely with the hospitals and worked as their homecare arm. Additionally the company enhanced the doctor-patient relationship by providing doctors with regular updates about patient vitals and condition; the company terms it as Home Visit Report (HVR). Very early in the journey, the company amazed the medical community and proved its capabilities by performing highly sophisticated procedures like: ICU care at home and chemotherapy at home. The company gained confidence to scale up by recognizing these early wins and remarkable patient satisfaction scores with an NPS of more than 65.The company today boasts of reducing hospitals readmissions by mitigating hospitals acquired infection and providing one-one care.

\"Our clinical quality and credibility comes from the vast experience of our partners who founded Healthcare At Home, UK, which is a GBP 1 billion company having presence in Europe and Australia. The Burman Family too has a 125-year legacy of credibility which is unmatched by the other players in the market,\" says Vivek Srivastava, CEO, Health Care at Home.

Adept Amiable and Accessible Care

Health Care at Home has a structured and highly specialized way of operating. The clinical experts execute procedures as prescribed by the treating doctor. The healthcare professionals carry tablet devices with a cloud based custom technology software installed on it which has the capability of recording close to 300 clinical parameters. The doctors are kept in the loop at all times by the Clinical Quality Team which shares regular updates about patient\'s condition. This also enables treating doctors to intervene in case of an anomaly or emergency. The company has got several patients out of hospital ICUs and given them ICU services at home which are comparable or sometimes even better than hospital services. \"Through our clinical governance framework, our clinical heads audit patients\' homes to ensure quality of clinical services delivered by our healthcare professionals\" adds Vivek.

Trained, Skilled and Experienced Workforce

Irrespective of the industry, every business strives to hire the best talent. While there are huge challenges associated with skilled workforce in the overall healthcare industry, Health Care at Home has managed to bridge the skill gap by taking an innovative stride. Through Berkeley HealthEDU, a sister concern, the company trains the clinical staff on a rigorous 6-week training program. This empowers and prepares the clinical staff to deliver care for all treatments and under all circumstances. Today, company has over 200 employees across 3 locations with 70 percent of the staff consisting of nurses, nutritionists, dieticians, counselors, physiotherapists and healthcare attendants.

Being a services provider, Health Care at Home invests substantially in its employees. The investment does not only limit to remuneration but extends to providing employees with opportunities to enhance domain expertise, continue/pursue education and contribute with independent projects with minimal supervision. The company puts special focus on safety and security of its employees especially women. Company has taken a number of steps starting from providing cab services to clinical staff for all patient visits to partnering with an emergency services provider.
