VirtualWire

Date:   Tuesday , November 10, 2009

With an aim to stretch the performance limits of existing wireless technologies, VirtualWire Technologies was started in the IIT Delhi incubator by IIT Delhi alumni and faculty. The company was founded with the vision of building a ‘VirtualWired’ world - a world without wires. In 2006, VirtualWire decided to build a UltraWideBand (UWB) based wireless chip and submitted a proposal to Council of Scientific and Industrial Research’s (CSIR) NMITLI program. CSIR approved the proposal and set VirtualWire on the path to becoming a wireless chip company.

What makes it different:

VirtualWire team has developed some very complex and high-performance wireless systems. In 2008, VirtualWire demonstrated a working UWB wireless link and started work on building an ultra high-speed wireless link based on UWB and multiple antenna technology, which can give multi-giga-bit data rates. Recently, VirtualWire completed its development of a 2Gbps MIMO-UWB wireless link, which it claims is 10-20 times faster than the typical Wi-Fi links.

What it offers:

VirtualWire claims to have the technology to developed wireless chip built for mobile phones, faster than the latest Wi-Fi mobile chips from major players in this space by at least 6-7 times. The key focus area of the company is building ultra-high data rate wireless technology.

Revenue model:

The Company builds products using its expertise in the wireless technology space, which it has gained by working with a range of OEMs for wireless and communications products, and aims to sell it to the mobile phone manufacturers.
