“Speechless” is how S. Somasegar rates his reaction on being conferred with an honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by the Anna University, Chennai. Among the key people responsible in setting up the Microsoft India Development Center (MSIDC) eight years ago, the current Corporate Vice President, Developer Division at Microsoft Corporation, accepts the honor with pride and nostalgia. The doctorate comes in recognition for his outstanding achievements in the field of Computer Science and in appreciation of technical innovation and excellence, and he is the youngest awardee in the history of the university.

But what mattered to Somasegar most was that he was being conferred the title from his Alma Mater. “The award reminds me of my student life and how much I owe this University for what I have been able to achieve in life today,” he says. He completed his Bachelor of Electronics Engineering from Guindy Engineering College, Anna University, India way back in 1986 and after a two-year master’s in Computer Engineering from Louisiana State University, joined Microsoft and has been there ever since.
Part of eight releases including Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 and in charge of developer-related languages, tools and platforms within Microsoft, Somasegar has a simple recipe for success. For him passion equals success. “What India needs to do is remain passionate about innovation and soon make this the hub of all innovation,” he remarked.
