Electronic waste generated in the country is expected to touch a whopping 4.7 lakh metric tonnes over the next four years, according to a study on e-waste assessment in the country conducted by MAIT. MAIT, the apex body representing the country’s IT hardware, training, and R&D services sector and GTZ, the German Technical Cooperation agency revealed that a total of 3.3 lakh tonnes of e-waste was generated this year, while fifty thousand metric tonnes was illegally imported into the country.

Further, the study said that out of this huge chunk of e-waste only 19,000 metric tonne is recycled. The reasons for this are the high costs for refurbishing and reuse of electronic products in the country, and poor recycling infrastructure.

The study which focused on the waste of computers, televisions, and mobile sets, is a survey of 200 corporate houses and close to four hundred households. Moreover, it reveals that 94 percent of the organizations studied did not have any policy on disposal of obsolete IT products or e-waste. Further, while a lot of business organizations were aware about e-waste, their depth of knowledge in the matter was negligible.

Of the total e-waste generated in the country, Western India accounts for the largest proportion of 35 percent, followed by the South at 30 percent. North and East account for 21 percent and 14 percent respectively. While North India is not a leading generator, it happens to be the leading processing center of e-waste in the country.
