Twin moves, up the ladder

Entreprenuer Jaithirth ’Jerry’ Rao, who until now was the Chairman of MphasiS has moved on to take up his position as the Chairman of EDS. Also Jeya Kumar, former Sun Microsystems executive, has been named the CEO and member of board of directors of MphasiS.

With a career of 20 plus years in the banking indusrty, Rao has served in major firms such as Citi, Citicorp, and Transaction Technologies in various capacities across the world. He then went on to co-found MphasiS, a California based software company, in 1998. MphasiS now is a majority owned subsidiary of Texas headquartered IT solutions company, EDS.

A graduate from Loyola College in Chennai, Rao studied further at IIM Ahmedabad and the University of Chicago. He is actively involved with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and with STPI initiatives, and has been Chairman of NASSCOM. He, along with MphasiS Vice Chairman Jeroen Tas, was named the Ernst & Young ‘Entrepreneur of the Year 2004’ for the New York region and later for India. In 2005, the Government of Karnataka honored him with the prestigious Rajyotsava Award.

Based in Mumbai, Rao is a regular columnist with a leading newspaper publication in India and occasionally teaches at IIM Ahmedabad. Also a published poet, he is reportedly working on a second collection of poems and a historical novel set in the 16th century.

Kumar joined Sun in 1993 and held a succession of increasingly senior management positions, including Senior Managing Director for Japan Sun Services and Vice President, Asia Pacific for Sun Services. He was instrumental in setting the architecture and implementing Sun Services’ infrastructure in Asia Pacific, which included the development of Technology Support Centers in Bangalore, India, and Beijing, China.
