Xiaomi Releases its Flagship Model Mi 5, Powered by Snapdragon 820 Processor

BENGALURU: Simultaneously launching at Beijing and at the MWC 2016, Barcelona, Chinese phone maker Xiaomi unveiled its much anticipated flagship offering, the Xiaomi Mi 5. This is the first time this maker has opted for a European launch. Xiaomi also showcased the Mi 4S at the event, however it was the Mi 5, which stole the show.

The Mi 5 will be available in three variants; two standard variants with the lower one featuring 3GB LPDD4 RAM and 32GB inbuilt storage pegged at CNY 1,999 (approximately 21,000), while the higher variant features 3GB LPDD4 RAM and 64GB storage priced at CNY 2,299 (approximately 24,000). The premium variant, called the Mi 5 Pro will have 4GB LPDD4 RAM and 128GB storage costing around CNY 2,699 (approximately 28,000). The standard variants have glass back bodies whereas the costlier one would come with 3D ceramic body, making it a bit heavier than the other two but more scratch resistant as well.

The Mi 5 is a dual-sim 5.15 inch phone with 1080p full-HD IPS display with 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution and 428ppi of pixels density. Offered in black, white and gold, at its heart the Mi 5 comes with a Snapdragon 820 processor mated with Adreno 530 GPU. Running on Android Marshmellow, Mi 5 will feature the latest Mi UI 7. The phone features 16-megapixel rear camera, Sony IMX298 sensor with PDAF and LED flash; it uses face detection, auto focus and deep trench isolation for faster focus and more accurate color reproduction.  The front camera is 4-ultrapixels and both the cameras have an aperture of f/2.0 for better shots in low light conditions.  The Mi 5’s camera is the first one to have 4-axis optical image stabilization system which introduces transversal image stabilization on top of latitudinal and longitudinal stabilization. To power all the machinery a 3000 mAh battery supporting Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 is provided. With a thickness of only 7.2 mm the phone weighs only 129 gm. On the connectivity front it features VoLTE support, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/ac, 4G, Bluetooth 4.2, Glonass, and NFC. The Mi 5 is a first from Xiaomi to sport a physical home button that also serves as the fingerprint scanner.

Hitting the retail stands in China from March 1, it is interesting to see when Xiaomi fields its flagship Mi 5 in rest of the world to face real competition from more established players.
