Xiaomi Refutes Launch Of Sub-5000 Smartphones

BANGALORE: Xiaomi known for its affordably modest price tags on devices with superior hardware has announced that they are not indenting to manufacture sub-5,000 smart phones any time soon, .TOI.

At the ongoing industry conference held in New Delhi, Xiaomi's global vice president Hugo Barra said that the existing provisions don't facilitate the manufacture of a sub-5,000 Smartphone that would bring out a high-quality consumer experience, Barra further said, “You should get more out of a 6,000 smartphone and we’ve tried to deliver that experience but getting it below 6,000 looks difficult at the moment.” Further reduction in the cost of Smartphones would affect the company’s profits to a greater extent.

Although Xiaomi is the third largest Smartphone vendors, they don’t have any physical retail outlets. However, online retailers and social media broadcast and sell the products online.

In regard to Indian market, Barra affirmed that Xiaomi are keen on investing in Indian startups, across different areas, including language projects. He said that the regional diversity permits hyper localization which would be the key factor for Smartphone growth penetration in India as he believes no attempt has been made to understand the language perspective in India. "Most users message in Hindi but don't use Hindi keyboards. Perhaps a different solution would address localization issues and bring Smartphones to a wider user base," he stated.

In relevance to upgrades, Barra said that the company is absorbed in projects that can be integrated deep within Xiaomi's Smartphone software. Barra is optimistic about 4G and said that there is huge potential for Reliance to change the game in terms of using Smartphones as an internet device.
