Will Audi's Dasboard Obey your Hand Gesture?

Bangalore: Audi showcased a new concept of dashboard which accepts your hand gestures commands and projects three separate displays on the car’s windshield at CES 2012. This technology of hand gestures command is supposed to replace buttons, controls and remotes in due course of time.

This new dashboard model employs three small DLP (digital-light-processing) projectors which are implanted in the dashboard and throw images upward. There are two cameras which use image detection and infrared technique to create a virtual 3D space below the windshield and allow the system to capture one-handed flicking gestures to flip through screens or select items.

The car mockup used in the demonstration, with three large holes in the dashboard for the projectors, doesn't reflect how a real vehicle with these features would appear, said Lorenz Bohrer, a user-interface researcher at Audi. The company has not disclosed any information about the actual implementation of this technology their cars.

At CES 2012, Mercedes-Benz also revealed a new concept in which drivers can pull up information about surrounding scenery by pointing at it. The demo video tells that driver can bring up information by gesturing at the icon which shows nearby restaurants, hotels, pedestrians and cars. Driver can also make calls or access emails on the virtual windshield.
