Ultrabook: A New Definition or Confusion

Bangalore: Intel defined Ultrabook is supposed to be an 11 or 13 inch sleek and speedy laptop, with SSD flash storage and no optical drive. But now with the launch of a wide range of Ultrabooks at CES 2012 this definition seems to be a bit confusing and blurred.

All the so called ‘Ultrabooks’  launched by different tech giants doesn’t fulfill the criteria’s to be as one, there are lots of variation in the specifications especially in terms of screen size, weight and thickness. Many Ultrabooks has 14 or even 15 inch screen and also crosses the less than 21 mm (0.8 inch) thickness and less than 1.4 kg (3.1 pounds) boundary. Some of them also have MATA hard drive and optical drivers.

So the conclusion is, there is no correct definition for an Ultrabook, it’s just an evolved form of laptop which Intel is trying to market for its survival in the between the buzz of Tablets and Smartphones. Intel says Ultrabooks deliver six main experiences which are: Creation to Express; Not Needing to Wait; Unwired; Peace of Mind; Reflection of Me; and At a Price That Works. But most of these experiences are already fulfilled by non-Intel players through Tablets and Smartphones.

To make this new breed of laptop survive the manufacturers should create less confusion and should stick to some definite specifications. Otherwise the Intel defined – Era of Ultrabooks – will never happen.
