Sony, LG Plans For Firefox OS Smartphone

Bangalore: At the outset of the ongoing MWC 2013, Mozilla Firefox announced several key carriers and manufacturing partnerships especially with top brands to gain a grip in the Smartphone market.

Following the announcements, brands like Alcatel and ZTE showcased world’s first set of Smartphones that runs on Firefox OS. Currently, the platform war is majorly between rivals Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. Apart from them, the other competitors in the market include Microsoft’s Windows and BlackBerry 10 which will eventually face a tough competition to rank the third place.

According to reports, brands like Sony and LG has shown keen interest in agreeing to have a deal with Firefox and are looking forward to introduce their Smartphones in 2014. Mozilla plans to launch its phones in markets like Brazil, Mexico, Poland and Spain. The company stated that the phones running Firefox will not offer much in terms of hardware.

The newly unveiled Alcatel and ZTE phones feature a reference design for the Firefox Smartphone. It features an 8.8 cm(3.5 inch) HVGA TN display, which runs on Firfox OS, powered by 1 GHz processor coupled with 256 MB RAM, internal storage capacity of 512 MB and a 3.2 MP camera at the back. The phone supports connectivity features like Bluetooth, GPS and FM radio.

Sony tries to re-establish itself in the market along with Firefox apart from relying on Android. Shortly, Firefox will have a tough competition with Tizen 2.0, Samsung’s Smartphone platform which is expected to launch in July this year.
