Smartphones Just Keep Getting Smarter

Bangalore: Smartphones keep getting smarter every day. The next smart tag which the future phones will be have is ‘psychometric’! A Psychometrician is a person who learns things about an object by just touching them. The future phones will come with some of this ability with the help of pre-programmed tags. Samsung and Sony is planning to release smartphones with this technology by the month of June, 2012.

How many times have we been woken up from sleep by an unimportant call? Well the new psychometric phone will have a tag that will put your phone in the “alarm clock mode” that will make your understand that you are sleeping and shouldn’t be disturbed. Just put a tag on your bed side lamp, and once you tap it against the lamp the phone would hold all your calls till the alarm goes off.

Who and What are they Doing?

You don’t have to wait much longer to get your hands on to this technology. Samsung announced that they would be releasing the tags very soon. These tags will come in the form of stickers, called TecTiles. The company says that these tags would be available in a set if 5 for $15. This technology will be incorporated in their new smartphone Samsung Galaxy S III.

Sony, aren’t the ones to be left behind the competition of developing and launching added features. The Sony Xperia Ion that is scheduled to launch on 24th June, 2012 will also have the feature of reading and understanding tags. Sony would have a coin like circular plastic tags that would have names that correspond to the environment they are in. For example, they would have tags which say “Home”, “Office”, “Car” so on and so forth.  The Sony version of the tags will be more expensive than the Samsung ones. The tags come in a set of four for $20. These tags can be programmed to start up an application according to the ambience. For example the Car tag can launch a navigation application.

NFC (Near-Field Communications) is the technology behind this innovation. And this points out the fact that the main motivation behind the development of this technology is to make customers more comfortable using mobiles as the future wallets.
