Bangalore: SDG systems launched a new Ubuntu based tablet called ‘Trimble Yuma’ which is specially designed for the U.S. military. The Yuma is an ultra rugged Linux tablet, which can survive military’s challenging work environment and can also safeguards confidential software and information. It is dustproof, sandproof, mudproof and withstands humidity and extreme temperature. We all know Android and iOS rule the tablet market worldwide. But Linux tablets are shaping up in it is own way to compete in this niche branch of tablet market.

“Our customers have told us that they need a rugged, military-grade, tablet computer running on Linux. We are pleased to provide that option for them,” said Todd Blumer, President of SDG Systems. “The water- and dust-proof rating, MIL-STD-810F testing and solid-state drive ensures that users will receive a durable Linux product that can be used in harsh conditions. With optional accessories like a vehicle docking station, the Yuma is ready to meet the field data collection or inspection needs,” states the press release.

Yuma is powered by 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor and runs on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Netbook Edition Linux operating system. It features a 7 inch touchscreen display capable of reading even in sunlight. It has a magnesium alloy case, two camera, 32 GB or 80 GB solid state drive for storage and an ExpressCard slot for expanding storage capacity. It also sports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. This ruff and tuff high performing Linux tablet comes with a huge price tag of $3,695.
