RIM Slashed Smartphones Prices by 27pct in India


Bangalore: Research In Motion (RIM), the maker of BlackBerry has lowered the prices of four of its smartphone models in the Indian market. RIM is trying hard to compete in this growing market which is very price sensitive and is presently ruled by Apple’s iPhone and high-end phones running on Android and.

The price cuts are aimed at making the phones “more accessible to a wider number of consumers in the country”. The four models which got about 27 percent reductions in price is accounted for about 60 percent of the company's sales in India, where BlackBerry devices have gained popularity among the youth, says Sunil Dutt, managing director for RIM's Indian operations.

RIM is doing this in a move to boost sales in the world's second-biggest mobile phone market according to the report by Reuters.

The four smartphones which got price cut are; the entry-level Curve 8520 whose price is reduced by 18 percent now costing 8,999, the Torch 9860 model got a reduction of 26.7 percent now it costs 21,990. The other two models Curve 9380 and Curve 9360 will be available for 16,990 and Rs .18,990 respectively from now onwards.
