Nintendo's Game Boy Which Popularized Portable Gaming Turns 25

BANGALORE: April 21, 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the release of Nintendo’s Game Boy, the portable device that revolutionized the world of gaming. The Japanese company launched its 8-bit Game Boy on 1989, and then named as ‘handy game machine’. Game Boy turned the console-based gaming industry on its head by starting a revolution similar to what the Sony’s Walkman did for mobile music.

This helped Donkey Kong and Super Mario turn into global franchises, enabling users to change the games they wanted to play by adding small cartridges in the device.

Kyoto -based Nintendo, which made its debut as a games card maker that changed in to video game player, did not invent handheld gaming.

According to Serkan Toto, a Tokyo-based games industry consultant, “the handheld gaming was identical with the Game Boy”.

The device was built on the concept of networking, which enables the users to connect with other gamer via link of cables and this made it a portable gaming, said Hirokazu Hamamura the managing director at games research centre.

Nintendo has not planned commemoration events for its iconic game that satirically predicted the generation of handheld Smartphone and tablet computer games, which became a tough rivalry to stationary consoles such as Nintendo’s Wii, Microsoft’s Xbox and the Sony PlayStation.

Nintendo’s Game Boy crossed 119 million units in its lifetime, followed by another 81.5 million units of the next-generation Game Boy Advance series that was introduced in 2001.

The advancement continued with the dual-screened DS consoles into the current line of 3DS. It would be better to say that Game Boy paved the way for what we label portable gaming at present.
