Nexus Now a Part of History; Pixel the Future

BENGALURU: Soon after the launch of its flagship product Pixel, Google officially announced ‘Good Bye’ to the Nexus program. The information regarding Google’s decision was published in ‘The Verge’ which confirmed from a Google spokesperson. The replacement of Nexus devices with Pixel in Google stores are added proofs to the information.

The existing Nexus devices are ditched by Google when it comes to having the latest Android version. The Pixel phones are run on the latest Android 7.1 Nougat OS, while Nexus devices will have to deal with a "developer preview" and a long waiting period. Even after several rumors the company has not made any official announcements regarding the integration of Google assistant into other devices.

For those who are not clear with the story, Google has traditionally launched phones through its Nexus program with the software handled by Google while LG, Huawei and Samsung, build the hardware. The Nexus One manufactured by HTC, released in January 2010 was the first phone by Google under Nexus program. It was released with Android 2.1 Éclairs, and was updated in May 2010 to be the first phone with Android 2.2 Froyo.

Recently Google began focusing towards developing an ecosystem of in-house products and platforms, such as the Google Home ecosystem, Google Assistant, and Google Daydream and introduced the Google Pixel. Unlike the Nexus devices, the Pixel is designed by and is marketed as a Google product; although the company contracted the manufacturing of the device to HTC as a contract manufacturer.
