LG's New Fingerprint Sensor is Embedded Under the Display

BENGALURU: Since the arrival of Apple’s iPhone 5s in the market, the trend of Smartphone security has been driven towards the fingerprint. At present, while several handsets leverage fingerprint sensor to unlock the device, few other Smartphones use iris scanner for access. However, the South Korean electronics giant, LG, announced the new module of fingerprint scanner that is embedded under the display. LG’s Innotek division spokesperson explains the process of this achievement by saying “cut a shallow furrow of 0.01inches (0.3mm) thick on the lower backside of the cover glass and install the fingerprint sensor inside it to create module.” LG comments the module has “high-strength cover glass” that shields the fingerprint sensor from scratches and water damage.

This advancement in technology would lead to the sleeker handsets in the future, as there is no requirement of extra space for the fingerprint sensor. According to LG, the fingerprint sensor in this new module is 99.998 percent accurate. Further, it can read the fingerprint in a fraction of second. “We are concentrating on all our resources to the development of the differentiated technology based on the creation of customer values,” said LG Innotek’s R&D Chief, Kim Chang-hwan.

Tech enthusiasts would now be keen on implementation of this technology in future Smartphones.
