Here Comes The World's Cheapest Netbook, Unveiled By IIT-B

BENGALURU: India is a cost- conscious country when it comes to purchases of gadgets. The middle-class people of India are yearning to lay their hands on latest technology and gadgets which are budget friendly. Incidentally the manufacturers have picked up this notion effectively by offering variety of budget friendly devices to choose from.

Additionally, students too are eyeing gadgets that can deliver the latest features and be pocket-friendly, and helping them with their college work. To answer all these needs, students along with professors and other experts at IIT- Bombay went on to develop a low-cost notebook well-equipped with latest features.

As reported by The Economic Times, the 10-inch netbook is claimed to be the world’s cheapest with a price tag of around 6,000.

The idea of this netbook was molded during the IIT-Bombay’s work with the low-cost Akash tablet. The budget-friendly netbook will be unveiled in the second week of February this year.

"We wanted a device that would make it easy for people to 'create' information. The netbook was born out of this desire," says Professor Kannan Moudgalya at IIT Bombay. IIT Bombay has tied up with Delhi-based Company Basic Computers, which has delivered 1,000 netbooks for the pilot phase.

Under this phase IIT Bombay plans to handover these netbooks to all   first year B Tech students at the institute who have to undergo an introductory programming course.

The netbook is light-weight and have a fully functional keyboard unlike the virtual ones. It has longer battery life, larger screen size, and more storage capacity along with a normal USB slot. The netbook is hoped to attract more students and other users as as Akash did when it arrived in the market.
