Google To Launch A low-cost Phone In India

BANGALORE: The Search Engine giant, Google has made public that it is working on a low-cost mobile phone for the emerging markets which will be priced less than $ 100. The company has said that it will be joining up with handset manufacturers to give out a reasonably priced phone with good quality.

According to the reports on the Economic Times , The low-cost Android powered phone from Google is said to have a display slightly lesser than 5-inches and will come with basic set of features including an FM Radio. Google was also working with the mobile phone service providers in India to provide affordable services to the users which could go along with the phone and provide Internet access “We are going to be launching it around the world, but will launch in India first in the fall of this year," he added.

According to Pichai, this is the part of a Google initiative called ‘Android one’, which sets out to work with the handset manufacturers and others on the “ecosystem”, and normalize the hardware platforms to provide “turn-key solutions” for making handsets.

"There are many people -- billions of people, in fact -- who still don't have access to a smartphone," he said. "We want to change that”.

The handsets are to be made by the Google partners and will be launched as an initial range of sub $100 smart phones in the market.

 “We've long wondered what potential could be unleashed if people everywhere had access to the latest technology and the world's information," Pichai said. "It's time to find out."
