Google Kills 'Picnik' and Upsets Users

Bangalore: The photo editing service ‘Picnik’ is going to be slashed by Google. The company says it will cancel Picnik and will import many of its functionality to other Google properties like Google+. With the death of this online photo-editing prowess many online photo sharing services like Flickr, Facebook, Photobucket, MySpace, Webshots, Box.net, Picasa Web Albums, and Lexmark will also lose it’s editing and enhancing features.

Thousand of unhappy comets poured in when Picnik website updated the news regarding its closing. A large portion of comments criticized Google’s tactic to make its social networking site Google+ popular by stopping Picnik.

"I WONT USE GOOGLE+ to access picnik features," a user named Kayla wrote. A writer identifying herself only as Amanda writes, "I am REALLY not happy about this. Picnik is one of the best web-hosting editing tools out there, and I CANNOT believe google is killing it." One Michaela writes, "This is NOT okay with me! Picnik is my absolute favorite place to edit photos. Photography is my hobby, and I don’t even post every picture I edit!"

Google is fully in a cost-saving move as it had shuttered down many other services like open-source Google Sky Map, the Needlebase data management platform, the Social Graph API, and the Urchin Web analytics product. Google new CEO LarrY Page seems to be really focused on what he said about streamlining last june "means we can double down on the really big bets like Android, Chrome, Gmail, display, and YouTube," , "Those big bets are really paying off."

When Picnik is at the verge of demise, another photo editing service named Aviary is trying to take Picnik’s place with all the basic photo edits like crop, brightness, and contrast. This new service which is coming up with a new Facebook App has several photo filters and stickers to add personality to your pictures. The filters give your photos an in-demand retro Instagram-look, a feature which Picnik lacked.
