Future of SSDs: Fall in Price, Raise in Popularity


Bangalore:  According to a market research company, IDC “The prices for SSDs (solid state drives) that are going into PCs are expected to fall below $1 per gigabyte during the second half of 2012.”

The research also revealed some good news for SSD, which stated that the popularity of SSDs will increase due the shortage of traditional hard drives, as result of the floods in Thailand. As most of the SSD manufacturers are based in Korea and Japan its availability is not affected and there lies an opportunity when PC vendor look for an alternative for hard-drives and SSDs comes as the first choice.

According to IDC, the increasing use of flash storage in enterprise solutions and the explosive growth of mobile client devices has already made 2011 a record year as the revenue reached $5 billion, a 105-percent increase from the $2.4 billion in 2010.

IDC anticipates that the SSD shipment will maintain its growth rate and will show a compound annual growth rate of 51.5 percent from 2010 to 2015.
