AMD Ultrathin: Slash Ultrabooks Price, Raise Intel's Worry

Bangalore: Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is equally competing with Intel by offering new Trinity based platform for ultrabook market with codenamed as ‘Ultrathin’, reports Digitimes.

AMD have named these laptops as Ultrathin because Ultrabook is the trademark of Intel. The ultrathin will be powered by AMD’s Trinity platform which includes dual and quad core processor options and will be integrated with graphics. AMD also claims that the Trinity platform consumes less power.

It is expected that more than 70 new low cost Intel ultrabook models will hit the market by this April and 20 new AMD Ultrathin models will be available by June.  HP, Acer and Asus will be the first ones to manufacture this Ultrathin.

Intel’s Ultrabook comes with a price range of 65000 to 90000. AMD Ultrathin models will be 10 to 20 percent less expensive than Intel powered Ultrabooks, therefore these Ultrathins will cost you only 40000. Due to this reason some computer manufacturers are worried that AMD’s ultrathin laptop will cause a  rapid price drop for Ultrabooks.

It seems AMD is sincerely coping Intel’s path, ultrabook was Intel’s concept and this is not the first time that AMD is producing similar products as Intel does. At CES 2012, AMD also launched a Lightning Bolt which is similar to Intel’s Thunderbolt technology. As Intel is trying to enter smartphone and tablet market with its Medfiled chip, AMD is trying to enter the laptops market with Trinity chip. Hope with war comes out to be good for customers.
