The Good: The Galaxy Beam is not just a smartphone it is a mini portable projector too. The built-in projector is the highlight of this device, apart from that it comes good battery life, decent camera quality and of course projector capability.

The Bad: It is agreeable that Galaxy Beam is not just an ordinary smartphone like others. But not all will be interested buying a projector smartphone unless you are a business traveler and has to give presentation very often. This extraordinary smartphone comes with a high cost of around Rs.29,000. As other projectors it also needs darkness to project which doesn’t make any sense to be portable.

The Bottom Line: The Galaxy Beam is a mid range with a good battery life which is longer than most high-end handsets in the market. On the other hand projector is good enough for casual usage and corporate use is out of the question here, as you will get more compact and reasonable priced projectors.

Design: At a first glance you will notice the its improvements in design over the original Beam. With 15 lumens projector on the top Samsung has done a good job of slimming its hardware into a decent lightweight package. With the yellow and chrome bezel it gives a sporty look. The soft and rubberized battery panel on the back will give a firm grip while projecting.

The Beam weighs 145 grams, just 5grams more than the Apple iPhone 4S and the projector is sleekly moulded into the frame. You can find the 5 MP camera at the back right below the projector.

In front it has a physical home button as all Samsung smartphone, VGA camera, chromed speaker and touch-sensitive keys. The side of the handset it has power and projector buttons, volume rocker and SIM and microSD slot.

Processor and Operating System: The device is powered by Dual-Core 1 GHz Cortex-A9 CPU, 768MB RAM, Mali-400 GPU, NovaThor U8500 chipset. It runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system which is outdated currently as Google launched its latest operating system names as Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Features and Performance:

Screen: The Beam has 4 inch capacitive LED-backlit PLS TFT touchscreen of WVGA resolution (480x800 pixels). It features 16M-color and Scratch-resistant glass. The screen is bit annoying in sunlight.

Camera: The device has 5 MP autofocus camera with LED flash featuring geo-tagging, multi angle shot and shoots 720p video recording at 30 frames per screen. It also has a VGA front-facing camera for video calls and chats.

Storage and Connectivity: For storage it has 8GB of internal memory, a microSD card slot to expand memory upto 32 GB. As far as connectivity concerned it comes with Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi, microUSB for PC connection, a digital compass, and an accelerometer sensor.

Battery: The Galaxy Beam gets power from 2000 mAh battery plus a stand-alone battery charger. As Samsung quoted, the device offers up to 8 hours of talking on 3G and when using heavily and keeping Wi-Fi on all the time it provides 3 to 4 hours of battery life for a day.

Wrap-Up: However, for priced concerned buyers the Samsung Galaxy Beam ends up with notably higher price than other smartphones with same screen and same chipset. Apart from the price bracket the smartphone is overall good with body quality and decent battery life. Seriously the projector is not for corporate use.
